Size Measurement Guide: What Every Homeowner Should Know

Whether you're planning a garage door replacement or just want to understand your current setup better, accurate measurements are essential. Incorrect measurements lead to doors that don't fit, costly returns, and project delays. This comprehensive guide walks you through measuring your garage door opening like a professional.

Standard Garage Door Sizes

Before measuring, it helps to know common sizes. Single-car garage doors typically measure 8 to 9 feet wide by 7 to 8 feet tall. Double-car doors usually span 16 feet wide with the same height options. However, many homes, especially older ones or custom builds, have non-standard openings.

Don't assume your door is a standard size.always measure. Even a half-inch discrepancy can cause installation problems.

Measuring Width

Measure the width of the opening at its widest point, from the inside edge of one side jamb to the inside edge of the other. Take measurements at multiple heights.top, middle, and bottom.as openings aren't always perfectly square. Record the widest measurement.

For replacement doors, you'll need this width plus the space for tracks on either side, typically 3.75 inches minimum per side. Insufficient side room may require special low-headroom tracks.

Measuring Height

Measure from the floor to the header (the beam above the opening). Again, take measurements on both sides, as floors aren't always level. Use the taller measurement.

The height determines not only the door size but also the opener and track requirements. Standard 7-foot doors work with most openers, while taller doors may need high-lift or vertical-lift track systems.

Headroom and Backroom

Headroom is the distance from the top of the door opening to the ceiling. Standard installation requires 12 inches minimum, but 15 inches or more allows for more options. Low-headroom kits are available for spaces with as little as 9 inches.

Backroom is the depth of your garage from the door opening to the back wall. You need at least the door height plus 18 inches for standard extension springs, or the door height plus 12 inches for torsion springs.

When Custom Doors Are Needed

If your measurements don't align with standard sizes, don't worry. Custom garage doors are readily available, though they typically cost 15-30% more and require additional lead time for manufacturing.
